matching girl and doll dresses . . .

A little while back, I was gifted a Chapters gift card from my secret sister. So I finally bought a book that's been on my wish list for a long time - All Dolled Up, a book with matching girl and doll clothes.

My youngest daughter came with me to the fabric store and picked out a couple prints for my first creation from the book.  I went with a simple jumper pattern - it looks nice with a t-shirt underneath, but my daughter insists that it can pass as a sundress too.

The pattern was well written and these didn't take long to make.  There's a zipper closure on the back of the girl's dress, and velcro on the doll (but I opted to use snaps instead).  I think my fear of little doll clothes was overcome with this project, and I'm hoping to make a couple more patterns from the book this Summer.

a modern window update . . .

Six years ago I sewed a pair of curtains for our bedroom, and they were starting to look a little outdated. So an hour spent in my sewing room, and a more modern set was made.  The print fabric is from Wholeport.com, and it's a canvas weight.  The black strip on the top and bottom is a heavier weight suiting fabric from my stash.

Canvas fabrics are a bit heavier weight than cotton and can be used for many different purposes.  Wholeport carries lots of modern prints in canvas, and I have quite a few on my wishlist for some bag-making.

Day Z Crazy baby quilt . . .

A good friend and I share a cousin and we made up this quilt for her new little one (a beautiful little babe with a head of gorgeous dark hair).

I picked up a fabric panel of daisies in a quilt shop on our mini cruise last month. The fabric line is called Day Z Crazy and it's an older line from Lakehouse Fabrics.  Then we just matched up some fabrics from my stash for the sashing, some LUSH fabric for the border sent to me from Patty Young, and a soft minky backing from our local fabric shop.

Really loving how bright and pretty this quilt is.  There's still half a panel of daisies left for the next baby girl born around here . . .

celebrating the unique in my kids . . .

Today is a sponsored post, and we've been asked to share what makes each of our kids unique.  So here's a little glimpse into our four little blessings . . .

Our oldest daughter is musical (she could hum a tune perfectly before she could talk) and she just sang her first solo in her school's Spring concert.  She also has the messiest room of all my kids (seriously - she has a hamper in her room and yet I can come up with a full load of dirty clothes stuffed everywhere).  And she's also always willing to try and learn new things (unless is involves dogs, absolutely terrified of those).

Our second daughter is more artistic.  She has won a couple art contests in just the past year, and would much rather spend her free time on a craft than outside.  She comes across as shy, but also seems to have the largest group of close friends.  She's also very loyal to her close friends, and will not put up with making fun of someone or leaving someone out.

Our youngest daughter is our expressive one. Her preschool teacher pegged her perfectly, 'everything she says is an announcement!'.  She is always so expressive and can come up with the funniest one-liners, and can deliver movie quotes with a total deadpan expression.  I hope she never loses her excitement for life and joyful personality.

Our handsome little guy is full of hugs and cuddles, but he can also get into lots of things.  I have to say that it's been getting easier as he gets older, but I have many broken things to show for all his 'discovering'.  Physically, he seems to be able to accomplish everything ahead of the game - throwing balls, riding his bike, climbing fences, and aiming his nerf gun at his sisters.

KINDER® is celebrating the launch of their new pink eggs with a contest.  All you need to do is answer the question - what makes your child unique?  Enter on their Facebook page and get entered to win $250!

not your traditional baby quilt . . .

A close friend was just blessed with a beautiful baby girl.  And because she told the name before her due date, I was able to get a head start on a personalized baby quilt for her.  She was born yesterday morning, and the quilt was already delivered to the hospital room.

The fabrics are mostly from Carnaby Street from Art Gallery Fabrics, with a couple coordinating prints from my stash.

The quilt design is strips pieced together on the diagonal, cut down into rows, and sashing strips added.  The baby name was done with fusible web, and the edges are machine stitched.  The backing is a couple strips of minky from my local fabric shop.

The baby's mama is not much of a pastel person, so she loved these bolder colors and prints, and the grey mixed in.  And the quilt is still girly enough that it won't get claimed by one of her three big brothers.

twin baby quilts . . .

Two precious baby boys were born into our congregation, and a good friend and I made them matching baby quilts.

The fabric is from Riley Blake's Maritime Modern line, and the backing is a soft minky from our local fabric shop.

The pattern is just a simple patchwork, and the letters were appliqued with fusible web and finished off with a machine stitch.

Tomorrow is a quadruple baby shower for these twins and two other new babes.  I'll show the other two quilts as soon as I get some pics of them!

easy applique letters . . .

After scoring a couple unopened packages of steam-a-seam on a local swap site for $5, I've been incorporating some applique into some recent projects.

It's really as simple as printing off a letter from your computer, tracing it onto the paper (make sure to trace letters backwards), ironing it to your fabric, cutting it out, and then ironing it to your project.  All the instructions are right on the package.

I like to use a buttonhole stitch to finish off the edges and avoid fraying.

The addition of a letter, word, or shape quickly makes a plain project look like you put lots of work into it :)

bits of sewing . . .

I'm not very good at keeping up with clothing trends, but it's hard not to notice that maxi skirts are everywhere right now.  And after seeing this tutorial and scoring some beautiful ruffle fabric from Christina, I thought I'd give it a go at making one. I wore it to church the next day and it was really comfortable.  I'm thinking that there will be more of these made this Summer . . .

And here are my May blocks for the Joy quilting circle of Do Good Stitches.  The blocks are all going to be cut in quarters and reassembled to make a Bento Box design.

Next on my to-do list is to finish up some baby quilts for a baby shower next week, hoping to share those soon!

Upcycling - something old into something new

This is a sponsored post today, and the topic is upcycling.  I thought I'd share a couple projects with you.

My girls love flowers and planting, and so we turned half barrels into a planter for each of them.  Now every Spring, they each get to plant and care for their own flowers.

And here is a clothing upcycle - I had this blouse with a great ruffle trim on it, and turned it into a top for my toddler.

Honey Nut Cheerios has upcycled their traditional cereal and added oat flakes and nut clusters to create Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch.  And they would like to give a coupon for a free box to 25 of my readers! Sorry, the're all gone! But don't worry, if you didn't snag a coupon, you can get another chance by submitting your 'upcycle tip' on their facebook page.

And keep your eyes on General Mills - there are going to be 7 new products released soon!

Disclosure – I am participating in the Honey Nut Cheerios Hearty Oat Crunch Blogger Campaign by Mom Central Canada on behalf of General Mills, and received compensation as a thank you for participating and for sharing my honest opinion. The opinions on this blog are my own.
